No :) you do not need insurance to book an appointment with a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). Clients are welcome to self-pay for sessions.
If you do have extended health benefits, RCC services may be covered, depending on your individual insurance provider and plan. We recommend checking directly with your insurer to confirm your coverage and reimbursement details.
See other FAQ’s below for more help if you plan to use your insurance coverage.

Many others as well cover Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs).
Verify your coverage and check your specific plan's wording (e.g., "clinical counsellor," "psychotherapist," or specific credentials like "RCC".
-
To ensure your specific plan covers an RCC, you should:
Check your benefits booklet: Look for "Mental Health," or "Counselling".
Confirm the designation: Verify if the plan specifically requires a "RCC" or if it includes "Registered Clinical Counsellors".
Ask about limits: Check for annual maximums (e.g., $500–$3,000) or per-session caps.
Contact your insurer: Use the member portal or call the number on your benefits card to confirm eligibility.
-
If your current plan does not include RCCs, you can request an amendment. Use these specific questions and talking points:
Ask for an "RCC Amendment": Request that your employer add "Registered Clinical Counsellors" to the list of approved providers. Point out that RCCs often have lower hourly rates than psychologists, making your benefits go further.
Request a Professional Advocacy Letter: Most RCCs can provide you with a standardized letter to send to your HR department explaining their qualifications (Master’s level training) and why they should be covered.
Inquire about a Health Spending Account (HSA): If the core plan won't cover RCCs, ask if an HSA is available. HSAs are flexible funds that can almost always be used for RCC services
-
Before your first session, verify these three items with your provider or insurer:
Registration Number: Ensure your counsellor’s BCACC registration number is on every invoice.
Coordination of Benefits: If you have two plans (e.g., yours and a partner's), ask how to "coordinate" them to cover 100% of the cost.
Claim Form Requirements: Some insurers require an itemized receipt rather than a simple credit card receipt.
-
You are required to pay for each session through my direct e-transfer. Once payment is received, I will provide a session receipt that will include my registration number and all other requirements needed for you to submit for reimbursement from your insurer.
